Term 3 Update & Reminders

To Parent/Carers

Dear Parent/Carers,

Term Three Update and Reminders

After two weeks of disrupted learning due to snow closure and late openings we are now back to full working.  This is an appropriate time to provide you with a number of updates and reminders about college policies.

Staff changes:

The following colleagues joined our workforce in January:

Mr S Inge  - Science

Mr T Probert - Mathematics

Ms C Lewis - VLE Development Co-ordinator

Mr G Smith has taken up a new role as 1:1 Tutor for Mathematics.

Governors:

Ms Peninah Achieng has been appointed as a new parent governor

College Website and Parent/Carer access to students information and data:

The restructured college website: www.because.org.uk is now receiving over 10,000 individual visits per month.  Many parent/carers are using the link from this site to access their individual child’s data.  If you have not yet requested your personal user name and password, please contact your community administrator to do so.  Once requested these will be posted to your home address.

If you would like to see further developments to the website, please contact Mrs C Breingan @ This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your ideas or views.

Policy updates:

Attendance

Since September 2009 the college has issued 43 Fixed Penalty notices of £50 and 16 parent/carers have attended Magistrates Courts.  As previously stated our college target has been set as 95.03%.  At the end of term 2 our figure stands at 91.45%.   As you begin to think about holidays for this year can I remind you that the college no longer authorises holidays during term time.  If your child has a minimum of eight and a maximum of twenty unauthorised absences in a ten week period, you will make yourself liable to the issue of a fixed penalty of £50 per parent/carer, per child.  A one week holiday equals 10 unauthorised holidays.  Please do not put yourself at risk of such a penalty.

Uniform

The vast majority of students now wear a high standard of uniform on a daily basis.  However, as always, a minority of students choose to alter, ignore or replace items of uniform with their chosen clothing.  Once again, to remind everyone, the following items are not allowed to be worn:

Girls:

Large earrings

Large wide fashion belts

Fashion boots e.g. Ugg style boots etc

Hooded non uniform tops e.g. Adidas/Nike etc

Fashion scarves

“Jogging” style trousers

Boys:

Hooded/non hooded non uniform tops

White Trainers

Gloves within the building

Hats within the building

“Jogging” Style trousers

Our uniform is deliberately simple to comply with.  Please ensure your child wears full uniform at all times.

Access to the College Site:

The permanent wayfaring signage will be completed on site during April of this year.

Since April 2009 we have been able to access fully the redeveloped site.  We have a pedestrian entrance for students and visitors.

We have a vehicle entrance for those arriving by car, bus, taxi, motor bike or bicycle.

It is vital that all students enter and leave the site by the pedestrian entrance.  The only exceptions are those students who arrive or leave by Education Transport or First Bus transport.

We respectfully remind parent/carers that they do not access the car park at the beginning or the end of the day to drop off or pick up students.  As from Monday 25th January, members of staff will be monitoring vehicles that are attempting to access the site at these times.

These rules are to ensure that we can meet health and safety requirements re pedestrian and vehicle separation on the college site.

If you require further information about any aspect of this update letter, please contact me at college.

Yours sincerely,

John Matthews
